搖滾樂並不是由貓王發明的，而和他同時期的搖滾樂先驅也有Dean Martin、Bill Haley、Chuck Berry、Buddy Holly、Jerry Lee和Little Richard等 等，在他之後的有比他更成功的披頭四（Beatles）。更甚是他並不寫歌，他的吉他技巧也是初級水平，故極其量也只能說他是一位傳統的歌手。但為什麼他能被人公認為搖滾樂之王？

他的歷史地位在於他以白人的身份，把黑人的騷靈音樂(Soul)，R&B，結合白人的鄉謠音樂(Country)和福音樂曲 (Gospel)融為一體，並將這種混血的音樂推向全美國。他的歌聲在1956年超越了種族及文化的疆界，對流行音樂的面貌造成了無與倫比的衝擊。雖然貓王從未在美國以外的地方演唱過，但他的音樂卻被全世界的樂迷所懷抱。
